Freiburg University Library
The Freiburg University Library, after re-opening its doors in July of 2015, is among the largest and most modern library buildings in Europe. Not only does the library’s spectacular new form make for an architectural exclamation mark, but it also provides its patrons with first-rate service and an optimal environment for study and work.
Following the design by Heinrich Degelo (Degelo Architekten, Basel / Itten+Brechbühl), the renovation phase lasted from 2009 to 2015. In the context of renewing the older building’s light- and energy-concept along with its climate control, the building received a completely new facade made of stainless steel and glass.
The building’s key characteristic is its permeability between the – for the most part – freely accessible open-stacks and the non-circulating collection on the floors above. These also offer more than 1,700 study spaces for the patrons: from traditional quiet areas to modern learning lounges.
From the outset, the design aimed at allowing the library to offer 24/7 service and to provide an RFID-driven self-service infrastructure, backed by a corresponding media transport system.
The opening phase of the new library has proven that these goals have been successfully met.
